Hey everyone! I'm getting this assignment done a bit late due to extenuating circumstances, but hope you enjoy the post anyways!
This week, we were tasked with developing our own Twitter feed made up of animal scientists, experts, and scicomm voices and then selecting three articles/videos to talk about! While I haven't seen much of the scicomm Twitter community as of yet, my first impressions are strong and I've already found several interesting articles. One of them was particularly interesting to me, being a scientific study on the genetic basis on whether or not a dog may respond to and engage in howling. My dog, Aki, an Akita Inu has never once howled in her life and couldn't care any less when the neighborhood dogs do it. When searching on Twitter, I found a scientific journal detailing a correlation, not necessarily with breed, but with domestication and howling behaviors.
A classmate of mine, Cailin also covered a similar topic, presenting an article from the NY Times. Naturally, I read it and found that many behaviors present in certain breeds are not often produced by the breed alone. In fact, through reading, I discovered only around 9% of behavior variations are a result of breed. I really enjoyed reading that article as it gave me just a bit more insight as to why my dog might behave the way she does. (That being lazy, then excited, then lazy again, all the while never making a single peep of sound. See below.)
Though I was a bit late to the punch, this first Twitter assignment was really fun and captivating! Hope to learn more soon!
