Good afternoon all! I think I'm mostly over my sickness from a couple of days ago... there's probably a dog out there who can sniff me and make sure it's gone. If there's one thing I've learned so far in this course, is that if it can be done, it already has been done... by a dog. This week, we used ChatGPT to generate some incredible true stories about our animals of choice and I generated two stories, one about a Sergeant Stubby, a dog that served in the first World War and a wolf who, for reasons unknown, behaved bizarrely gentle, peaceful, and cordial with the people of Juneau, Alaska.
Sergeant Stubby, after being found and adopted by an American serviceman, served for 18 months on the Western Front of the war. Amazingly, he was reported to have held a German soldier hostage by gnawing at his pants until reinforcements arrived. Me personally, I believe it. Look at how noble he looks!
Then we have Romeo the Wolf, a black wolf who, on many different occasions, fraternized with both the people and the dogs of Juneau, Alaska, forming what many people considered to be genuine friendship. He would float in and out of town often, but would always be friendly to all those he encountered. Unfortunately, Romeo was killed by hunters before his behavior could be properly examined and studied.
On top of that, I read several posts from my classmates. I learned of how foxes are capable of learning through observation and imitation, reminding me of the Rook birds from Bird Brain last week! I also learned the tale of another fiercely loyal dog a German Shepard named Capitan who, similarly to Hachiko, visited his owner's grave regularly. Lastly, I decided to take a look at what my classmates on the avian side were up to, and found a post about how penguins share parenting duties within their societies, as if they knew the old adage "it takes a village."
